Ladakh is one of those regions in India, that promises to stimulate the senses for the traveller. An overland journey is recommended to this cold desert region of Jammu and Kashmir, to take in the unseen grandeur of the towering mountains and the beauty in nothingness for miles. The terrain is challenging, yet exciting, making this route a rite of passage for adventure seekers. You’re sure to bump into biking tours and even cyclists, pushing the pedal meditatively to reach some of the highest places in the country  – or even the world. Ladakh is home to the highest motorable road of the world. Statistics apart, it is dotted with calm monasteries tucked on top of craggy mountains, where maroon robed monks life their life simply.

The highest and coldest lakes of the region are another draw, where camp life can be experienced. All you need is layers of warm clothes and a neck that can stay cocked to the sky for an entire night. Thanks to the rough terrain and basic life of the mountains, a trip to Ladakh offers many feelings on the spectrum – from adrenalin pumping road journeys to tranquil monasteries.

What to Expect
Allow for your life to get shaken up on my fronts – literally and figuratively. This trip is best done over two weeks or more, so that the body and mind can acclimatize to heights of several thousand feet. For the mind, it’s a calming experience to see local life in the villages and humbling treks to the monasteries. Just a simple routine of the sun glinting on the top of a Stupa can unfold life’s mysteries in a moment. Such is the power of this enlightening place.
