Unearthing the unusual
No. of Days: 7
Overview: Discerning travellers often want to avoid the holidaying hordes of India’s most popular ‘Golden Triangle’ itinerary (Delhi-Agra-Jaipur), but the charm of history draws them in anyway. After all, it would be heretical to miss architectural delights that bloomed under the Mughals. We take this route and turn it on its head to offer the best of essentials as well as things that regular travellers will give a miss. An enthralling journey is planned in the flushed capital of Rajasthan to include unusual spots and hidden gems like crumbling baoris (step wells), or lesser-known Saturday fairs just outside the city. Our favourite addition to this trip are people who make this city special – a royal dyer who gives his special tinge to the royal family’s clothing and a man who has been feeding the monkeys of Galta Ji Temple for decades.
The same strain follows Agra, where apart from the magnificent Taj Mahal, we visit conservation camps for elephants and bears, and trawl the old city for ancient crafts. Delhi’s old and new are experienced with an alternative hue – covering the forgotten stories of the treaded monuments and things that other itineraries would give a miss. The Golden Triangle is indeed unavoidable for first timers in India, but we ensure that you see it with a different gaze.
What to Expect: The fact that many other travellers will be on the same route is unavoidable. But the thrill of doing things that others don’t and getting a unique take on the destinations will make this trip memorable. While we recommend an entire week or more for this trip, you can choose to customize this as per your time and interests. All three places have such a wealth of experiences that there is a new thing at every turn. Be ready to get introduced to one of the most legged tourist routes of India, but unearthing secret jewels and unforgettable locals.
