The land where spirituality abounds
No. of Days: 7
Overview: The thrum of life in Amritsar is in step with the Golden Temple, it’s most famous spiritual sightseeing spot. Thousands visit its calm environs each day and are left mesmerised. For many travellers, Amritsar supersedes expectations. They visit keeping the Golden Temple as the cynosure for sightseeing but are left amazed at the wealth of things to see, cuisines, local interactions and the treasure trove of history in and around the city. A weeklong trip gives you ample time to see the well-known and offbeat sights, indulge in Punjabi hospitality and definitely come back a few kilos heavier.
Apart from essentials like eating langar at the Golden Temple and visiting at 3.30am for the ceremony where the Granth Sahib is brought out to the main sanctum, we add a number of things to see in the labyrinth of streets behind the temple. A heritage walk, a food trail, shopping streets, the Jallianwala Bagh light and sound show and Ram Bagh make up for the first two days. Wagah Border’s beating retreat ceremony and food at Sarhad are recommended. While most trips would stop at this, we suggest that you add a couple of days in an authentic farm and a small city like Hoshiarpur and also see the famous Tarn Taran Sahib Gurudwara on the way.
What to Expect: Expect to see lush fields clinging to the sides of the roads, dramatic white marbled Gurudwaras rising above the buildings in a city, boundless energy on the streets and warm hospitality (mostly exhibited by great food) when travelling through Punjab. Get a flavour of farm life, stay in a plush heritage hotel and see local life at close quarters in Punjab. This trip opens your eyes to the vast history and heritage of the state, and things to see beyond the Golden Temple.
